The Art of Tile Pairing: Melbourne Trends and Ideas

When doing renovations or choosing tiles for a new build, the art of tile pairing can be quite complex, especially if you’re not an interior designer. Let's take a look at some current trends and ideas for pairing tiles in Melbourne, to give you some inspiration for your own interior decor.

Pairing Large Format Tiles

As you probably know, large format tiles, like this ultra white gloss tile, are all the rage right now and pairing these with other tiles takes a little ingenuity, so the final result is as aesthetically pleasing as it is practical. You can easily use the larger tiles on major areas such as walls and floors, and then add some smaller, unusual-shaped tiles as a feature behind your basin and a frieze around your bath.

Play With Colours

Another idea is to use the same tiles but in different colourways. For the main areas, select a colour that matches your existing decor and then look for a complementary colour in the same tile style, such as this Pepper Stone smooth grip tile available in a range of colours, to use as a feature.

Combine Shapes In Unusual Ways

When laying kitchen or bathroom tiles, you can easily play around with the design so that you end up with something unique. This will allow you to use different-sized tiles without them looking out of place. In this example, square tiles in two different colours are laid diagonally to create a checkered look for the floor. Smaller subway tiles in the lighter colour are then used in the shower alcove to make it look slightly separate from the main bathroom area.

Timber Tiles Pair Well With Almost Anything

If you absolutely love the look and warmth of timber but you don’t want it to be too overwhelming, you can easily pair timber tiles with ceramic or porcelain ones for a truly welcoming aesthetic. For example, you could use dark timber tiles on the floor and then add softly patterned ceramic tiles or even kit kat tiles for the splashback. This gives you a look that’s both timeless and modern.

Marble And Timber Create The Look Of Luxury

Here’s another example where timber and ceramic tiles have been paired to create a luxurious bathroom that you’ll never want to leave. The timber tiles are used on the floor and even on the base of the shower. These can then be complemented with large format marble-look tiles, like this beautiful Veneto Calacutta tile, or even marble mosaic tiles in a slightly darker shade that just works perfectly.
